Cattle Flat Station
Cattle Flat Station is home to 8,000 breeding ewes, 300 Merino wethers, and 560 breeding cows on 5,400 beautiful hectares in Northern Southland.
Farming here dates back 150 years, with the Young family purchasing the land in 1993. Since then, they’ve transformed the station from an undeveloped high country property to a more modern system of sustainable farming.
The station’s landscape spans fertile river flats, high tussock country, and native beech forest. It borders 20 kilometers of the Mataura River, known for exceptional trout fishing, and 8 kilometers of the Tomogalak River. Over the past 28 years, significant reforestation has taken place, with areas now part of the Emissions Trading Scheme.
Cattle Flat offers agritourism opportunities, including fishing and free-range hunting for red deer, fallow deer, wild pigs, and chamois. Its mix of traditional farming, conservation efforts, and tourism makes it a unique part of the Southland landscape.
